ENCOUNTER WITH EHRENBURG / Разведка боем (2006)

We are now, more so than ever before, in dire need of someone like Ilya Ehrenburg. His passion, his sense of moral correctness – as he said, “the wolf hunter is right, yet the cannibal errs,” his science of how to develop hatred towards the enemy, his talent for life, in synch with strivings, triumphs, and downfalls, of his time. He was a revolutionary in Moscow in the 1900s, a bohemian in Paris in the 1910s, an anti-Bolshevik poet and satirical journalist in Europe in the 1920s, a pro-Soviet novelist in Paris and later a war journalist in Spain in the 1930s, the most popular war journalist in the Soviet Union in the 1940s, one of the designers and advocates of the “thaw” period in Soviet Union in the 1950s, author of memoirs that forever changed the outlook of the Soviet citizen and opened up a window to Europe and the lives of its leading figures in the 1960s. All these varied descriptions fit one individual, a charming, passionate Jew, of medium height, who Vladimir Lenin dubbed “Ilya uncombed.” In fact, fate seemed to offer itself to Ilya, in an indeed unkempt way – full of contradictions, pulsating with emotion, lengthy, and yet youthful.

The film was shown in St. Petersburg at the exhibition of photographs of Ehrenburg at the Anna Akhmatova Museum and was highly appreciated by the audience, among them academicians Alexander Fursenko and Boris Ananich.

In 2007, the film was voted Best Documentary at the City Studios All-American Television Competition.

The film’s duration is 50 minutes. Producer and director: Mariya Gershteyn. In the film: poet Naum Korjavin, American writer Joshua Rubenstein, historian of literature Boris Frezinsky, and representative of the Moscow intelligentsia of the generation of the sixties, Garry Zaslavskiy.

Как не хватает нам сейчас Ильи Эренбурга! Его страсти, его чувства правоты –“волкодав прав, а людоед нет!”, его науки ненависти к врагу, его таланта жить, разделяя порывы, взлёты, увлечения и трагедии своего времени. Революционер в Москве в начале двадцатого века, богемный поэт в Париже 1910 х годов, антибольшевистский поэт и публицист в послереволюционной России, блестящий политический сатирик в Европе в 20 х, советский писатель в Париже и военный корреспондент в Испании в 30 х, самый популярный военный публицист в Советском Союзе в 40-х, глашатай и подвижник эпохи оттепели в 50-х, автор воспоминаний, перевернувших сознание советских людей в 60-х.

И всё это один человек – увлекающийся, обаятельный, яростный еврей небольшого роста, которого Ленин, встретив в Париже назвал Ильёй лохматым. Судьба ему действительно досталась непричёсанная, противоречивая, насыщенная, долгая, яркая и молодая.

Фильм показывался в Санкт-Петербурге на выставке фотографий Эренбурга в музее Анны Ахматовой и получил высокую оценку зрителей , среди них академиков Александра Фурсенко и Бориса Ананьича.

В 2007 году фильм был признан лучшим документальным фильмом на всеамериканском конкурсе телепередач городских студий.

Продолжительность фильма 50 минут. Продюсер и режиссёр Мария Герштейн. В фильме принимают участие: поэт Наум Коржавин, американский писатель Джоуш Рубинштейн, историк литературы Борис Фрезинский, представитель московской интеллигенции поколения шестидесятых годов Гарри Заславский.
